An hilarious Krazy Kat today.
Our first features are the 31 January and 01 February 1921 Gasoline Alley strips scanned from Walt & Skeezix vol. 1 the Drawn and Quarterly Publications reprint volume from last year. (Click the thumbnail to open a larger version in a new window.)
Right about now, you can feel Frank King’s enthusiasm waning. He’s floundering for ideas, is beating this “Walt wants a new car” gag into the ground. And you know what? In just a couple weeks, he’s going to break the stip’s mold, change it from a car strip to something more. Stay tuned.
Here’s a Krazy Kat daily gag from 1911 or 1912. (Click the thumbnail to open a larger version in a new window.)
I think that Kat strip is hilarious. It’s still an early one, but you get the feel that Herriman can bust loose into the absurd. He’s still several years away from his classic style, but he’s beginning to get a feel for things.
I believe that the above strips are in the Public Domain.
